Professional Headshots

Why having a good headshot is essential for your business

With the rise of social media, it's now easier than ever for potential customers and clients to find out more about you and your business. That's why having a good headshot is essential. It's basically your "calling card" in the online world. Potential customers and clients will use your headshot to form their first impression of you, so it's important that it conveys the right message.

1. A good headshot should be well-lit, professionally composed, and should show you at your best.
2. It should convey confidence and approachability, and give viewers a sense of who you are as a person.
3. A headshot that is professional can help convey trustworthiness, competence, and professionalism.
4. Your business portrait should be recent so that it accurately represents how you currently look.
5. Headshots can also be used on your website, business cards, and other marketing materials. Having a consistent headshot across all of your marketing channels helps create a professional look for your business.

In short, a good headshot can make all the difference in how you're perceived by potential customers and clients online. So if you're serious about building your business, invest in a good headshot today.

How Often Should You Update Your Headshots?

A headshot is a professional portrait that is usually used for business purposes. Many people have headshots taken when they first start out in their careers, and then never update them. However, it is important to keep your headshot up-to-date, as it should be an accurate representation of how you look today. There are a few different factors to consider when deciding how often to update your headshots.

First, think about how often your appearance changes. If you have a significant change in hairstyle or make-up, then it may be time for a new headshot.

Second, consider how long it has been since your last headshot. Even if you don't look drastically different, it is still a good idea to update your headshot every few years to ensure that it looks current.

Third, think about how you will be using your headshot. If you plan on using it for professional purposes, such as on a website or on a business card, then you will want to make sure that it looks its best.

Updating your headshot regularly ensures that you always have an accurate and professional representation of yourself.

The benefits of having updated headshots

When it comes to headshots, many people think that any old picture will do. However, in today's business world, having an up-to-date headshot can be a real asset. A headshot is essentially a business portrait, and it conveys a sense of professionalism and competence.

In addition, an up-to-date headshot can help you stand out from the competition. Whether you're looking for a new job or trying to attract new clients, investing in professional headshots is always a good idea.

1. Business headshots are an important part of having a polished and professional image, whether you're an entrepreneur, consultant, or c-suite executive.

2. A headshot can be used on your website, social media profiles, business cards, and marketing materials - giving potential customers and clients a clear picture of who you are and what you do.

3. In today's digital world, first impressions are everything, and a high-quality headshot is an essential part of making a good one. Hiring a professional photographer to update your headshots on a regular basis (every 1-2 years) is a great investment in your personal brand. Not only will you always have up-to-date headshots that reflect your current look, but you'll also have peace of mind knowing that you're presenting the best possible version of yourself to the world.

Career Change and a New Headshot

So you're thinking of making a career change. Congratulations! That can be a really exciting time, full of new opportunities and possibilities. But before you start applying for jobs in your new field, there's one important task you'll need to take care of: getting new headshots.

Your headshot is often the first impression potential employers will have of you, so it's important to make sure it's a good one. Gone are the days when a candid snapshot from your friend's birthday party would suffice - these days, you'll need a professional headshot that looks like a business portrait.

Fortunately, you are on the right website! Our studio specializes in professional headshots in the San Francisco Bay Area. Click BOOK NOW and get ready to start your new career off on the right foot!

Personal Headshot Style

When I opened up my Headshot Studio in San Francisco back in 2015, I had already established my signature style. Before that, I would work on creating unique and creative portraits for each client, but more often, I would hear requests like “Can I have a headshot like this, I like the dark background”. And they would point to the style I loved the most: Headshots on a dark background.

The headshots on a dark background always look so sophisticated, strong, and confident. My website is built with a clear message about my style. I want my clients to be confident knowing the quality and exceptional results they will get. There is no guessing game. My brand style conveys my skills as trustworthy and reassuring. While incorporating many different backdrop color choices - the results always speak about professionalism, confidence, and desire for success.

Why Hire a Corporate Headshot Photographer?

A corporate headshot is more than just a picture of an employee's face. It's an important part of the company's brand and should be given the same attention as any other marketing material.

A professional headshot photographer will know how to capture the essence of the person in the photo and convey the desired message of the company. They will also have the technical skills to produce a high-quality image that can be used on everything from business cards to website banner ads.

In today's competitive business world, it's essential for companies to have a strong online presence, and professional headshots are a key part of creating that presence. By investing in a professional headshot photographer, companies can ensure that their employees are represented in the best possible light.

Matching professional headshots that look similar to existing team portraits

For the past few months, I have noticed a trend in my headshot inquiries that looks something like this: “I started a new job and my firm would like me to get a professional headshot that looks similar to their existing team photos (please see link below). Would you be able to take such photos of me with a similar background?” My answer is YES! It is not only a matter of matching the background, but also lighting technique and editing style

Right now a lot of people still prefer to work remotely from home. This opens up an opportunity to employ new team members nationwide, even globally. It’s understandable that if a company has already established a visual brand on their website and social media, they want to keep it consistent. Looking for a photographer that is skillful in matching lighting and editing style might not be an easy task.

Contact me if your office or company needs help with matching headshots with existing ones.

7 Reasons Why You Need a Professional Headshot

© 2017 Valentina Sadiul Photography

1. Personal Brand. You are your own personal brand and your headshot is your sign/label/logo. It needs to look good, well put together, and professional.

2. Professional online presence. With so much networking taking place online these days, a handshake isn’t always viable. Having a professional headshot gives the impression that you are professional, you are dedicated, and you are confident in your ability to get the job done.

3. First impressions matter. Your headshot may be the first thing people see regarding your business – whether online or on a business card. You need to look qualified and confident.

4. Stand out from the crowd. You are not the only one who does what you do. No matter what type of work you do – there is always someone else who does so, as well. That is why it is so important that you stand out from the crowd. Be original. Be professional. Be the difference.

5. High standards. Who wants to show themselves professionally with a selfie? What does this photo state to your potential clients or employers? Selfie photos are for personal social media sites – not the workplace. A professional headshot speaks volumes about your high standards. It shows that you go above and beyond to get the perfect picture and speak the perfect image. You were willing to take the time to do things right, rather than grabbing an old photo on your phone of you at the concert you went to last week. You took the time to create an appointment, attend it punctually, and purchased the professional headshot so that you can brand yourself in the proper, confident, competent manner.

6. Get that job interview or audition. A professional headshot can give you a chance to prove your capabilities just by the poise displayed in the photo. You will exhibit strength and sureness of yourself and your abilities. This gives you a better chance at grabbing the attention you need to get your foot in the door for that interview or audition. Don’t be just another number!

7. Get a self-esteem boost! We all need to feel good about who we are and what we do. Having a headshot photo session will make you look your best which will, in turn, make you feel your best. And what happens then? Your confidence and self-esteem will soar.

Now that you know why you need one – schedule your professional headshot photo session today!

Professional Headshots for Financial Advisors

Financial Advisors usually spend much time at the office handling the monetary needs of their clients. Whether it is stocks and bonds, insurance decisions, tax laws, or virtually any type of investment, a Financial Advisor must look at the situation in whole to make the best decision for the long-term financial success of his or her client. In other words, you need to make sure that your client can trust you.

When you meet someone in a business relationship online, what can you use as your firm handshake – the one that says, “I’m confident and can take care of your investments as if they were my own?” - Your headshot!

Your headshot can either draw in clients or send them running. Therefore, having a professional headshot is so important. After all, who would you trust more with your financial assets – the one with the selfie photo on a surfboard? Or the one with the professional headshot?

Your headshot is your key to branding. It appears on your business cards, your social media profiles, the very important networking site LinkedIn, etc. When it comes to Financial Advisors, trust is a must. Many in this position receive referrals from others within their network. If you present yourself well and do your job with confidence, you will go far.

Now that you see how important a professional headshot is, let’s look at a few tips that will help you achieve the image you desire to portray:

  • Dress with confidence. For men, dressing in a solid, classic, dark-colored business suit tends to work best. For women, solid, dark colors in a shirt or suit-coat will work well.
  • Avoid bright colors. Unless your company is known for a particular bright color, try to keep your headshot more mellow. For example, you can never go wrong with blacks, browns, grays, etc.
  • Avoid big jewelry. It is definitely ok to wear jewelry, but keep it to one large piece. When in front of the camera, a little goes a long way.
  • Avoid big patterns. While they may look great in person, they don’t do so well for the camera. Stick with solids.
  • Plan. Make sure you do any prep work in advance of the headshot photoshoot. For example, sunless tanning, waxing, shaving, hair dying, etc.

In short, it is the way you present yourself that is going to help you succeed in your career. People are attracted to those who are poised, confident, charismatic, and bold. Let your corporate headshot show off your top qualities!

Backdrop Colors for Headshots

As a headshot photographer, I prefer three major colors for headshot backdrop: white, black and gray. And, a few other colors in special circumstances. Choosing the right backdrop for your headshots sometimes is a subjective preference. Before a photoshoot, determine how your headshots will be used: on your website? LinkedIn profile and other social media channels? Business cards and other marketing print materials?

Professional-Headshot-on-white-backdrop

White backdrop - The headshot on a white backdrop looks crisp, vivid, and appears to be modern and professional. Most of the corporate companies prefer the white backdrop for the clean and smooth look. Likewise, the doctors and other people involved in the medical industry choose the use of white backdrops for their headshots for the same reason.

Professional-Headshot-on-dark-backdrop

Dark backdrop – A black backdrop gives a headshot an empowering and sophisticated look. Many CEOs, young entrepreneurs, financial advisors and classical musicians prefer their headshots on the black backdrop, which looks great as their profile pictures on their websites. In fact, my success in headshot photography started from creating my signature look of portraits on dark backdrop.

Professional-Headshot-on-Gray-Backdrop

Gray backdrop – A gray backdrop provides a highly professional look. Headshots on gray backdrop are timeless and very practical. Gray backdrops may never go out of style.

Professional-Headshot-on-Brown-Backdrop

Brown backdrop – Brown is regarded as a warm earth color that communicates about stability and sincerity to the audience. The headshots taken against a brown backdrop appear reliable, mainly in cases of family therapists, psychologist, and life coaches, who widely prefer this backdrop in their headshots.

Other colors in backdrop – Use of other backdrop color is as a special request by art directors and graphic designers who want headshots to be part of the branding colors.

Your headshot is your personal brand. It is always a good idea, before booking a professional photoshoot to consult with a professional photographer, art director or graphic designer, regarding the selection of the ideal backdrop color to get the best headshots.

Posing for the camera can be an awkward moment for many people. It is important to feel relaxed and confident in front of the camera for your photographer to deliver the best of you. Surprisingly, even the most photogenic people can easily become stiff and nervous on the camera.

Here are 4 tips on how to feel comfortable, relaxed and confident in front of the camera:

Dress impeccably and comfortably

Headshot+Tip+Success+1

It is best to dress in clothes and footwear that make you feel powerful and elegant. Your shoes, make-up, jewelry, and clothes choice should complement what you stand for without detracting you from your brand. Wearing clothing that makes you comfortable and confident will alleviate any stress or anxiety when posing for the camera. Remember, your dressing style reflects your real personality.

Body Language

Headshot+Tip+Success+2

It is essential to have the good posture, natural movement, and a smile in front of the camera. It is worth remembering that your body language tells a lot about you. For your own convenience, find a highly experienced, knowledgeable, and trustworthy professional photographer to work with. A reputable headshot photographer will guide you on the right angles. You don’t have to have modeling skill when you have a skillful headshot photographer.

Be punctual

Headshot+Tip+Success+3

Punctuality matters a lot regarding boosting your confidence in front of the camera. Every business-minded person knows the essence of being punctual. Arriving late for your headshot photography session can easily trigger anxiety or stress.

Get excited and have fun!

Headshot+Tip+Success+4

You are more likely to have a successful headshot session if you allow yourself to have fun throughout the whole experience. Looking forward to your forthcoming headshot photography session can effectively boost your confidence.

In addition to the above tips, sipping water/other beverages in between the takes, complying with the crew’s request, looking at the camera confidently, limiting all distractions and breathing easy can lead to a successful headshot photography session.

Tips on Choosing Accessories for Your Headshot Session

Professional headshots are very important for highlighting the profiles of the career-oriented people. Because of this, it is important to give these photos the best shot – by dressing carefully with the right attire and, though they are often overlooked, the proper accessories. Together, these can make their personalities more impressive for the viewers.

Here are a few tips on those important accessories that you may otherwise overlook:

Right headshot accessories for men

Mens-Accessories-Tie-Bow-pocket-square
  • Tie – Lots of company executives or businessmen prefer to wear ties in an attempt to appear formal. They present with a polished look, often seen among professionals such as lawyers, financial advisors, and real estate agents. But headshots without a tie are also welcomed by people who want their professional portraits to look a bit informal or portray themselves as easily approachable. This are common among new businessmen owning startup companies.
  • Bow tie – A bow tie is a more informal form of neck accessory for men. Musicians, politicians, actors, and some businessmen seem to prefer the use of the bow tie as a mark of their style.
  • Pocket square – This is a traditional fashion of men, creating squares or stylish designs with hankies placed visibly in the suit coat pocket.

Most suitable headshot accessories for women

Women-Accessories-Jewelry-Glasses
  • Jewelry – When it comes to jewelry, minimalism is key. For example, a pair of small ear studs, instead of large earrings or a simple chain can be used instead of a broad necklace. However, if the woman is a jewelry designer, she can wear some selected sleek jewelry pieces that are designed by her.

Suitable headshot accessory for both men and women

  • Glasses – The glasses are recommended to be used by both men and women who wear glasses on a generally. It is preferable for the glasses to have anti-glare coating to avoid the reflection of the light. If you wear glasses, make sure you take all the pairs you own to your headshot session to see which work best.

Solution for Office Group Portrait

As a headshot photographer, I work with companies and offices with multiple team members. One of the challenges in production of a Group Headshot Session is to get everyone together on schedule in the same place. Usually, during business hours, offices schedules are busy and not everyone has availability to join group portrait. Scheduling become even more complicated if the office has many employees. Someone has an important meeting, someone is out of town, someone stack in traffic, etc.

So, when a company’s goal is to get a successful team photo, but scheduling is tough, there is a great solution.

Group-Headshot-Photography-Office.jpg

This first team photo represents an office of 5 professionals. Each of team member was shot individually, digitally extracted from the background, and composed to group photo in Photoshop.

Group-Headshot-Session-crop-2

Individual headshots can be rearranged in any order you like. It is very helpful in a situation when someone leaves the company or a new hire joins the team. Instead of investing in a new group headshot photoshoot, the person who left company can be easily removed digitally. If company or office has a new hire, he/she can schedule an individual session. Once in studio, he/she will be photographed in the same style to match your group photo, extracted from background and added to the group photo with help of Photoshop.

Group-Headshot-Photography-3

This technique not only allows you to have the freedom to remove or add new team members, it also allows you to change background of your company's group photo, depending on your branding needs.

My Signature Editing for Your Professional Headshot

As a headshot photographer, I work with real people from the classical music and business world. They are not professionally trained fashion models and most of them feel uncomfortable on front of the camera.
The major difference between an amateur portrait photographer and skillful one is not only a strong knowledge of lighting and equipment, but also having skills in directing and editing.

Headshot-editing-retouching-workflow-before-after-Valentina-Sadiul

The process of the headshot photoshoot in my studio includes a guidance on how to pose, professionally set-up lighting and equipment, shooting tethered, so clients can give me feedback during the session to ensure that we achieve the best results in short time. The crucial step of final look is retouching favorite images. Keep in mind that photographers who provide unedited images to the clients are delivering unfinished work. This is not accepted in business of professional photography.

My signature editing includes:

  • Improving color, contrast and sharpness

  • Retouching skin by clearing up blemishes and reducing wrinkles as needed

  • Removing flyaway hairs and adding volume to the hair if needed

  • Enhancing eyes

  • Fixing the wardrobe shoulder line, editing underarms in sleeveless headshots.

Additional editing service can be provided by request for additional cost.

Makeup and Hair Tips for Your Professional Headshot

You understand how important a headshot is for your career. However, to make the most of your time with your photographer, you are going to want to make sure your makeup and hair are camera ready – which is a bit different than your normal wear. Not only will it boost your confidence, but will also even out your skin tone and cover any blemishes.

Makeup-tips-for-headshots

To get you started, here are a few tips about makeup and hair for your professional headshot:

  • Find a professional makeup artist.

It is highly recommended that you utilize the services of a professional makeup artist. Making people look good is their specialty. Locate a professional in your area and make your appointment.

  • Utilize services in your local department store.

If seeking a professional makeup artist isn’t an option, you can always check out the services at your local mall or department stores. Companies such as Sephora or MAC offer makeup services to prepare your makeup for your headshot.

  • Let your beauty shows.

You have natural beauty. Sometimes you just need to help it shine through. This natural beauty is what the camera is looking for. One week before your photo shoot, make sure to take care of any tanning, hair coloring, etc. so that it looks more natural as the week passes. Two to three days before, make sure you are drinking lots of water and avoiding things such as caffeine, the sun, alcohol and smoking. The night before? Get rest and lots of it.

  • Doing your own makeup.

If you choose to do your own, make sure to use a yellow tinted foundation, as white tends to reflect the flash of the camera. Keep your makeup natural. Research tips for enhancing the eyes for emphasis. Stick to matte foundations and lip colors to avoid any reflection from the flash.

  • All about the hair.

There is a perfect hairstyle for each of us – find yours. Make an appointment to have great hair for your headshot session. Get a style that compliments your features and boosts your natural beauty.

  • For the guys.

All this prep isn’t just for the ladies. It is important for guys to plan for their headshot photo shoot, too. Make sure you have your hair styled in a way that fits your look. Also, if you intend to have facial hair in your headshot, start growing it well in advance.

Planning ahead and following these tips can ensure that you have the most successful headshot session.

Why Lawyers Need a Professional Headshot

Nowadays, every professional person needs to have a professional headshot that will act as his signature mark in the online commercial world. The lawyers need their headshots as much as the other professionals, as it increases their reliability in the eyes of their clients and thus help them make progress in their career.  The attorney headshot is extremely useful for posting in the business pages of social media sites, like LinkedIn and Facebook.

Enhances the trustworthiness

When people find the image of the attorney in different websites impressive enough, they feel more inclined to approach those lawyers for solving their legal problems, even if they do not know them very well. The profiles of the lawyers should always be accompanied with their professional headshots, for making their career smoother than others who do not bother to use one.

Increases the fame instantly

The attorney headshot can successfully become the brand signature of a good lawyer and speaks more about his confidence and professional success than what is written in his profile in words. Moreover, it makes the job of easier for their clients, when they are searching online to get in touch with that specific attorney for discussing their legal matters. Websites and social media profiles without headshots are usually passed over the one hired is someone that does have one.

How to get the best headshot for a professional lawyer

  • First of all, it is best to hire a professional photographer, who is experienced in taking headshots with latest photographic equipments, because any unprofessional work will fail to draw the attention of the potential clients, as a properly done headshot should do.  So every ambitious lawyer should be ready for the expense of hiring a reputed professional photographer for this work.

  • The lawyer should make sure that only his/her face is primarily shown in the headshot, to make it instantly noticeable, as one looks at the photo. So the background of the photo needs to be absolutely professional, without anything that may distract the viewers’ attention.

  • The lawyer should wear only professional or any formal attire that suits best his personality and what other successful lawyers are seen to wear in their headshots.

  • The pose of the lawyer should be impressive while taking his headshot that will make him look smart and confident. So it is better to consult the hired photographer, who can suggest the best in this regard.

What to Wear for Your Headshot Session

Headshot is a professional portrait of a person, where only the face and the upper part of the body is visible, mainly stressing on the face expression and eyes of that person. The headshots are generally used for posting online with the job applications and the profiles of the professional people, so that their clients can be impressed by their personalities. Therefore, the dress of that person should be distinctly dignified and should give a professional look to the wearer. So everyone should be careful about the clothing that can be used while posing for a headshot.

Few useful tips for the selection of clothing for any headshot session

  • Generally, people should wear only formal wear for the headshot sessions; like two-buttoned suits, shirts or formal kind of gowns. The formal wear is essential so that the people appearing in the headshots look perfectly professional to the viewers.
  • It is better to avoid too much colorful clothing for a headshot, as it is best to keep a simple and plain look for these professional photos. Likewise, too many flowery or decorative patterns should be avoided, while selecting the dresses for shooting headshots. No funny pattern or funky style is approvable while selecting dress for a headshot session, as it will make the wearer look cheap to the viewers of his/her profile.
  • Whatever dress is chosen, the wearer should be perfectly comfortable in wearing it; so that he/she looks confident in the headshot. But this dress should be a part of his/her personality; it should never become the main point of attraction of the viewers.
  • The dress taken out of the wardrobe should be perfectly clean and spotless, so that the wearer does not look messy while wearing it. Moreover, the attire should be well ironed, to make the wearer look smart and confident.
  • The clothes should be well fitted and any loosely fitted apparel should be avoided in these photo sessions. The whole point is to highlight the person wearing it, which cannot be achieved by wearing a heavy or voluminous type of dress.
  • It is best to wear the traditional types of formal dresses, as the latest trendy attires may become old-fashioned within a few months and then the wearer will have to take another headshot for keeping his/her profile updated. But a few traditional styles are all-times favorites of people and they never seem to go outdated; like the formal suits or simple white shirts with ties.

Selection of the proper colors of headshot attire as per the skin tone of wearer

According to the expert advice of the professional photographers, the color of the dress selected for wearing in a headshot session should be in sharp contrast to the skin tone of the wearer. If the wearer is very fair-skinned, he/she should opt for a deeper shade of any sober color, to make his/her face more prominent in the headshot. On the contrary, if the wearer has dark colored or medium colored skin tone, he/she needs to wear only a light colored dress, to highlight his/her features in the headshot. Some photographers also suggest choosing the color of the dress according to the eye color of the wearer, to personalize the photo even more.

Parts of outfits that can be overlooked by the wearer

Generally, only the face and the upper parts of the body are visible in a headshot and not the lower parts. So the concerned person needs to be conscious only about choosing the shirt or the top that he/she will be wearing in the headshot session. But the trouser or the skirt will not be visible in the photo, for which the wearer or the photographer need not bother about the selection of these parts of the clothing at all. Neither the wearer needs to match the shirt with the trouser or skirt, as the lower part will not be seen at all. Similarly, he/she can wear any kind of shoes in these photo sessions, as the footwear also does not matter in any headshot.

Special kinds of attires preferred in a few specific corporate houses

When a person needs a headshot for submitting in a corporate company for job purposes or to make commercial tie-ups, his photo should be entirely different from that of a model or actor. Hence, the clothes chosen for this kind of headshots should be different too and the wearer needs to be careful while selecting his/her headshot attire. Since some corporate houses may have their unique preferences regarding the attires of their professionals, it is better to consult the website of the concerned company and derive ideas about their official dress codes, from the posted photos of their top officials.

Ideal dresses for the headshots used on commercial purposes

  • It is usual for every corporate company to maintain a certain dress code in their offices, which is preferably maintained in the headshots of the people attached to them.
  • Most of the offices like to see their employees in long-sleeved dresses, to maintain decency of the workplace, which needs to be shown in the headshots of the people applying there. So generally, most of the corporate headshots should be taken with full-sleeved shirts only.
  • Even the women professionals need to be featured with decent shirts or collared blouses in their headshots. It is better if they wear suits or simple coats over their shirts.
  • Both men and women can put on jackets over their shirts or blouses, if suits or coats are not available in their wardrobes.
  • The women professionals should be careful about wearing minimum jewelry, of very sleek designs. They should look very simple in their headshots.

Consult with the professional photographer shooting headshots

The experienced photographers are well aware of the types of dresses that should be used for making the best headshots of their clients. Hence, it is best to show the chosen attire to the hired photographer, before finally putting it on for a headshot session.
